Sportscaster arrested for damaging 'racist' Plantation Estates sign

Warner Wolf turned himself in and was arrested Thursday for removing the letters of the word

The offense? Allegedly tearing the word, "Plantation" off the front sign at his gated community there called "Classics Plantation Estates".

Longtime sportscaster Warner Wolf was arrested this week in Florida for removing letters from a sign at his private gated community that spelled the word "plantation", officials said. He turned himself in to police Thursday and charged with criminal mischief.

When they arrived, authorities found "the damaged sign was in a water fountain", according to a police report by the Collier County Sheriff's Office, obtained by the Miami Herald.

Wolf had been a "vocal critic of the name "Plantation" at board meetings", the report states, and had advocated for the word to be taken off the sign.

Warner Wolf turned himself in and was arrested Thursday for removing the letters of the word "plantation" from the "Classics Plantation Estates" on November 30.

After a brief investigation which included interviewing the witness and reviewing the surveillance footage, the sheriff's office found probable cause that Wolf had violated Florida statute 806.13 1B3 and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Police were called to the gated community on December 15 after residents complained about the vandalized sign, the Miami Herald reported. "'The male passed the broken 'Plantation" letters that were removed from the sign to the security guard with instructions to give the broken letters to the property manager.

He was released the same day after posting $5,000 bond, NBC News reported. More recently, Wolf did sports reports for former radio host Don Imus.

Wolf also appeared in Rocky IV.

The local ABC and CBS great was famous for his "Let's go to the videotape" catchphrase.
