Storm Erik leaves SNOW in its wake as temperatures PLUMMET back down

STORM Erik is causing chaos across the country as it batters the United Kingdom with high winds.

On Saturday night there will be some rain across southern England with snow falling over hills in places.

Scotland faced strong winds on Friday with some disruption to rail and ferry services.

As winds ease off later on Saturday, some hill snow is forecast in central and southern parts of England and into Wales, Mr Burkill said, before calmer conditions on Sunday.

Met Office meteorologist Simon Partridge said throughout the rest of Saturday, winds of "up to 70mph on exposed coasts and 50mph winds inland" are likely.

'Sunny spells for many of us, also a mixture of rain and showers in other parts of the UK.

Conditions in the north will be brighter, with some rain and gales possible later on.

'Through the day basically all of this weather is going to move its way south and eastwards, with the rain in the south gradually clearing its way eastwards, although the southeast corner will hold on to a rather grey and damp day.

'And then this area of low pressure starts to make its way across Northern Ireland as we head through the afternoon.

Members of the public look on as Storm Erik makes landfall with winds of up to 70mph to hit some areas of the United Kingdom along with heavy rain on February 8, 2019 in Prestwick, Scotland.

A separate yellow warning running until 3pm on Saturday for northern Scotland predicts heavy rain could lead to flooding.

Storm Erik came with a status orange weather warning for Donegal, Mayo and Galway and wind gusts at times were really powerful.

A yellow weather warning has been issued from 10.30am until 8pm in Portsmouth and the South East.

The Met Office has put a weather warning for wind in place covering most of the United Kingdom, with strong winds expecting in the south of Scotland, much of England, and Northern Ireland.
