TSA confiscated record number of guns from carry-ons in 2018

The amount averages to be 11.6 firearms per day with the most discovered during the month of August when TSA found 32 at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport

Americans are apparently flying more than ever - and they're packing heat.

Last year, TSA screeners confiscated 4,239 guns at USA airport checkpoints, equalling an average of 81.6 guns a week or 11.6 a day, which is a 7 percent increase from 2017, the TSA said Thursday in its Year in Review report.

5 with 123 guns packed into carry-on bags, 112 of the weapons loaded.

The figures mirrored a national trend of more guns at airports.

What part of it's illegal (and dangerous) to pack a loaded gun in your carry-on bag aren't we getting?

In their Year in Review report, the federal agency announced the staggering 4,239 firearms found marks a 7 percent increase from 2017.

More than 86 percent of those guns were loaded, the TSA said, and over 33 percent had a round in the chamber.

TSA rules concerning firearms and ammunition maintain that only unloaded firearms can be brought onto a plane but they must be in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage and must be declared to a TSA agent before boarding.

'I'm just going to guess here: I think more people are just simply carrying weapons in the country and we reflect what we're seeing around the country, ' TSA administrator David Pekoske told CBS News.

That 2018 tally included 21 guns at Logan International Airport, nine at Bradley International Airport in CT, four at T.F. Green Airport in Rhode Island, four at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, four at Portland International Jetport, two at Burlington International Airport, and one at Worcester Regional Airport, according to the release.

In December, TSA agents discovered a bottle of lighter fluid on a passenger travelling from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and five replica mortar shells in a checked bag at Orlando International Airport.

TSA can impose civil penalties of up to $13,333 on travelers who try to bring prohibited items on a flight. But guns were also found in the luggage of an 84-year-old woman, a 10-year-old boy, a pastor, and an airport worker. The pilot, Brian Andrew Machtemes, who lives in Minnesota, was arrested at Southwest Florida International Airport.

New England airports saw a surge past year in the number of guns seized at checkpoints, according to data released Thursday by the Transportation Security Administration. Of those, 253 were loaded.

Guns weren't the only prohibited items discovered at checkpoints a year ago. "Call us at 866-289-9673 or shoot us an email (pun intended)".

TSA also noted that a record number of travelers passed through airports in 2018, with 813.8 million people going through security screening.
