BAFTAs 2019: The Favourite, Roma win big

"Roma" is also nominated for best picture at the Oscars later this month, which has propelled Netflix into the Hollywood club of elite filmmakers despite fears that its streaming business model could undermine the industry.

Costume romp "The Favourite" was the biggest victor at the BAFTAs on Sunday, taking seven awards, but Netflix black and white film "Roma" picked up the Best Film prize, as well as Director, at Britain's top movie honors.

It was the big night before the Oscars with everyone waiting to see who would win big at the Royal Albert Hall.

Colman stars as the eccentric monarch, with Weisz as the queen's confidante and Emma Stone as an ambitious newcomer determined to inveigle her way into Anne's affections.

This year's leading actress category is similarly competitive, featuring Glenn Close for "The Wife", Lady Gaga for "A Star Is Born", Melissa McCarthy for "Can You Ever Forgive Me?", Olivia Colman for "The Favourite" and Viola Davis for "Widows". The only thing that pretty much pulled me out of that was God, my belief, my faith and my family and an email from Bafta saying they wanted me to be a part of the Bafta Breakthrough Brits and I was like "let me try again".

"We're having an fantastic night aren't we", Colman told her fellow "The Favourite" nominees as she picked up the award.

Alfonso Cuaron's semi-autobiographical film, about a domestic worker in 1970s Mexico, has won a string of prizes this awards season, further cementing its path to potential Oscar success.

The ladies are both nominated for their work in the movie The Favourite, which has already won the award for Outstanding British Film. "We're going to get so (drunk) later", Colman told her fellow "The Favourite" nominees as she picked up the award to loud cheers. It's got my name on it but we can scratch in some others.

Cooper picked up the Original Music prize for his musical remake, "A Star Is Born", while Adapted Screenplay went to Spike Lee's "BlacKkKlansman".

BAFTA also recognized Rami Malek as Best Actor in "Bohemian Rhapsody" where Malek played the iconic rock star Freddie Mercury. He paid tribute to Mercury in his acceptance speech.

"Free Solo" - a film about the first person to climb El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without ropes - won the award for best documentary. The Duke of Cambridge as President of BAFTA presented the Fellowship of the Academy, its most prestigious honour, to film editor Thelma Schoonmaker.
