Dramatic rescue of baby underway in Durban

Paramedics rescue a newborn girl from a drain in Newlands East Durban on 11 February 2019

"Rescue workers are busy trying to get to the baby at the moment", said Rescue Care's operations director, Garrith Jamieson.

Authorities were called out to the scene at the corner of Herring Circle and Barracuda Rd early on Monday after people walking by heard the baby cry. We kept praying for her and God answered.

KZN health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, who went to the hospital to see the newborn, said the baby would be moved to a smaller hospital, then discharged to a place of safety.

He added that they can hear the baby crying and have gained access into the pipe. "Rescue efforts are underway try to rescue it", he said.

KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said: "It's good news for the ending of this rescue today. We thank God for her".

Emergency crews spent three hours trying to reach the infant, who was lodged some 23ft down the drain.

The area was cordoned off by police. Some community members have named the baby girl, 'Storm'. "She's basically stable enough to be transferred to one of the other base hospitals". "A helicopter is inbound to transport the baby to a nearby hospital as soon as possible", said Jamieson.
