Google Rolls Out AR Navigation In Maps App For Local Guides

On top of that, your battery would drain really fast, so it's probably best to use the AR navigation feature in shorter intervals.

We haven't heard much else since the feature was first talked up, but Google is now letting a select few testers see how AR navigation works in the real world.

Tech giants like Apple, Facebook, Google, North, Vuzix and others have all been working on, or are selling their own AR glasses, meaning that Google's new feature could eventually make its way into your line of sight, the report added. The AR navigation mode uses the phone camera and Global Positioning System location to display arrows in the real world for navigation. According to the report, one would need to hold up their phone and scan their surroundings.

Google hasn't given any indication of a date as to when this feature will become widely available, and Pierce notes that it will arrive "only when Google is satisfied that it's ready".

Engadget reports that Google Maps AR navigation is going to be rolling out to Local Guides first - i.e., those people who like to write reviews and submit them to Google Maps - and that the system still needs some testing before it will hit universal availability. After it has done this, it then creates directions for the user based on the location. The system too reportedly warns users against this. It will prompt users to put it down after a short while. The app then superimposes arrows on to the real world to show where you have to head next. The company originally introduced the AR navigation feature at a developers conference a year ago.

When Google had shown the AR feature, the idea was that AR will help place the user more accurately on the Maps.

There's no denying that Google Maps has made our lives easier, from tracing a route to exploring eateries and salons in a location, the navigation app does it all.
