Mickelson Wins Weather-Delayed AT&T Pebble Beach Pro

Phil Mickelson has a three-shot lead

Even as Mickelson strongly hinted at wanting to finish - at point suggesting they play the 17th and he could scoot ahead to get a ball in play on the 18th so at least he could finish - Casey stood his ground.

The course will be completely different in June, with the rough taller and the greens firmer and no amateurs to take the edge off the proceedings.

Instead, he had to return early Monday morning to complete his 44th PGA Tour victory, claiming a fifth AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am while also becoming the eighth-oldest victor in PGA Tour history.

The frozen pea-sized pellets soon covered the greens, and play had to be suspended.

A rain delay and bad light forced Mickelson and Casey to return on Monday and the 48-year-old retained his three-shot lead to seal glory at the site of this year's U.S. Open - the only major he is yet to win and has finished as runner-up in six times. Play was expected to resume at 1 p.m. local time.

The final round earlier was delayed for one hour because of rain.

A greenskeeper uses a leaf blower to clear hail from the second green of the Pebble Beach Golf Links during the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament Sunday, February 10, 2019, in Pebble Beach, California.

Morning temperatures were in the low 40s.

It was the type of weather that once gave the event its reputation.

Such days were known as "Crosby weather" when Bing Crosby was the tournament host for the better part of a half-century.

Pebble had one round in 1962 postponed because of snow.

"This really is a special place for me, going back to 1919 when my grandfather was one of the initial caddies here", the 48-year-old said after becoming the oldest victor of the event.

The start of the day's play was delayed by an hour for rain and stopped again for two hours as a hailstorm hit the California course.

The steam coming off his head in the Sunday night gloaming at Pebble Beach was undoubtedly due to the frigid air that permeated the tournament, although few would be surprised if Phil Mickelson really was seething over the idea that he wouldn't be allowed to finish despite two holes to play in enveloping darkness.
