Saudi aide named in Khashoggi murder report sworn in as UAE envoy

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel al Jubeir says Saudi authorities do not know the location of slain dissident Jamal Khashoggi

Jubeir was interviewed on Friday, the same day President Donald Trump ignored a congressional deadline for reporting on who assassinated Khashoggi, a columnist for the Washington Post who had been openly critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS).

A State Department spokesman said Pompeo provided an update to Congress on Friday in the form of a letter, but the spokesman did not elaborate.

"The crown prince, we know, did not order this".

A bipartisan group of lawmakers, including Democratic Sen.

"Seeing as the Trump administration has no intention of insisting on full accountability for Mr. Khashoggi's murderers, it is time for Congress to step in and impose real consequences to fundamentally re-examine our relationship with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and with the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen", Mr. Menendez said in a statement.

Adel al-Jubeir, Saudi minister of state for foreign affairs, said the murder was carried out by Saudi officials "acting outside their scope of authority" and that 11 people have been charged with the crime. "This was not a government-sanctioned operation".

After initially denying his death, Saudi Arabia has confirmed that its agents killed him but denied its senior leaders were behind the killing.

"I wish Congress would take a step back", he said. He called the slaying a "rogue operation".

He echoed the United Nations blame for the Houthis, vowing that Saudi Arabia would "absolutely" allow passage of food through ports in Yemen. The crown prince had nothing to do with this. Asked about the report Sunday, al-Jubeir declined to comment.

A year before Khashoggi was murdered October 2 in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Prince Mohammed told Aldakhil that he'd use that bullet if Khashoggi didn't return to the kingdom and stop criticizing the government from his perch in the US, the Times reported on Thursday. "We have a number of possibilities, and we're asking what [the alleged murderers] did with the body, and I think this investigation is ongoing".
