The DOH recently declared a measles outbreak in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Western and Eastern Visayas.

Travellers at Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ont., were warned last week that people who were in the airport's Terminal One for a four-hour period on January 27, may have contracted the disease.

The doctors advised parents to provide the first dose of measles-containing vaccine (monovalent measles, MR, MMR) earlier than the usual 9 months.

Present was New York University School of Law professor Mary Holland, co-author of a book titled Vaccine Epidemic: How Corporate Greed, Biased Science, and Coercive Government Threaten Our Human Rights, Our Health, and Our Children, as well as a vaccine-autism study that surgical oncologist and Science-Based Medicine managing editor David Gorski described as "bad science, bad law", and a "massive ethical failing". Health officials are urging residents to get immunized.

"I don't feel I'm putting my child at risk. There's nothing that's going to change my mind on this on that specific vaccination", said mother Monique Murray.

The weekend brought a break in new measles cases amid an outbreak centered in the Vancouver area.

Compared with January of past year, measles vaccinations in Clark County are up 500 percent, from 530 doses to 3,150 doses. Measles' incubation period can be as long as 21 days, leaving public health officials on edge for weeks after the most recent reported case. People who have never received a measles vaccine are susceptible to the disease, which can be deadly.

Children with measles are confined at San Lazaro Hospital.

Infection does not require close contact and measles can survive in close areas, such as a bathroom, for up to two hours after an infected person has left.

The number of people infected with measles has climbed to more than 4,300 with at least 70 confirmed deaths, the health chief said Monday.

Measles is so contagious that an unvaccinated person has a 90 percent chance of catching the disease if they're near someone who has it.
