UFC 234: Israel Adesanya defeats UFC legend Anderson Silva

Israel Adesanya

Whittaker's opponent Kelvin Gastelum arrived to the event with a new UFC belt over his shoulder, presumably belonging to his friend, flyweight champion Henry Cejudo who was on hand for the event and declared himself the new champion, referring to amateur wrestling rules where an opponent forfeits if they do not show up after weighing in.

Adesanya is now undefeated in five UFC fights and 16 MMA bouts. "I earned this", Gastelum said.

Israel Adesanya had the torched passed to him from a legend while putting on a show in the impromptu UFC 234 main event on Saturday night. The topics of Conor McGregor and Anderson Silva's next fights seem to be looming for the company's public face. Light heavyweight Jimmy Crute scored a controversial TKO win against American Sam Alvey, despite Alvey furiously protesting the referee's decision to end the fight early as he insisted his thumbs were up while Crute was ground-and-pounding him. Adesanya had the faster hands and was consistently getting home, though he wasn't punching in combination. Sometimes it's not in your control.

The three-round fight, between sixth-ranked Adesanya and 15th rated former champion Silva, was elevated to main event status, after a severe abdominal injury forced champion Whittaker to withdraw from his title defence against No.1 contender Kelvin Gastelum.

Whittaker's manager Titus Day told The Daily Telegraph his fighter started suffering from bloating shortly after Saturday's weigh-in.

White would not speculate about whether an interim championship would be created and said that he projects Whittaker will be able to resume training in four weeks.

"Then about 10 o'clock we got a call from (Whittaker's wife) Sofia saying he's got some bad stomach cramps and he's in quite a lot of pain and can't sleep ... it got to the stage at about three in the morning where he was taken to hospital".

Meanwhile, Silva embraced the crowd following his hard fought loss and stated once again that he's not going anywhere except back to the gym to prepare for his next fight. "This is my heart. Hopefully, I'll fight in Curitiba".

"F*ck, he didn't want the surgery, he wanted to fight", Prates said.
