BBC cameraman assaulted in 'violent attack' at Donald Trump rally

The Donald Trump supporter could be seen being restrained after the incident

A supporter of US President Donald Trump was removed by security from a Texas rally after jumping into the media pen, shoving reporters and knocking over several cameras filming the event.

The BBC's Washington correspondent Gary O'Donoghue, who is blind, tweeted a clip of the assault and said such behaviour was a "constant feature" of Trump rallies.

A BBC journalist has shared footage from Monday night's Trump rally which appears to show a cameraman being attacked. Fortunately our cameraman is fine, he is made of stern stuff, ' O'Donoghue told the Today programme.

In the footage, the camera which is focused on Mr Trump is jolted away.

He yells "fuck the media" twice before being led away.

"I have been spat at before, they hurl abuse at American colleagues in particular", he added.

Mr O'Donoghue said Mr Trump's 2020 election campaign, which he thinks has begun, will be as "hostile and ill-tempered and divisive as the one we saw last time".

BBC's Ron Skeans was recording video of President Donald Trump speaking about immigration when he was knocked off balance by a man in the crowd, who can be seen moments later being restrained by another man wearing a red MAGA hat.

Washington editor Eleanor Montague revealed in a tweet that her cameraman Rob Skeins was attacked as the crowd was "whipped up into a frenzy".

A BBC spokeswoman said Mr Skeans was "violently pushed and shoved by a member of the crowd" as he covered the rally.

'It is clearly unacceptable for any of our staff to be attacked for doing their job'.

The US President has accused the media of "refusing" to cover his work and openly called them "enemies".

In August previous year United Nations experts warned that Trump's anti-media invective increased the risk of journalists being targeted with violence.

Trump told the crowds inside El Paso County Coliseum that 69,000 people had signed up to attend.
