Bryan Singer's Red Sonja shelved amid controversy

Red Sonja Millenium Films Bryan Singer

Millennium Films CEO Avi Lerner had released a controversial statement post the article and called it "agenda driven fake news".

After being fired from his film Bohemian Rhapsody amid production, director Bryan Singer was roped in to helm Red Sonja.

"Now, it seems like the public pressure against the project has finally become too much for the production to handle, as The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed that Red Sonja "...is no longer on the company's slate and it is not being shopped at this year's European Film Market in Berlin".

Singer, who was sacked from directing duties of his last film, Oscar-nominated Bohemian Rhapsody, has not been officially removed as a director from Red Sonja but he is also not a part of the company's slate, according to the Hollywood Reporter. "In America people are innocent until proven otherwise".

Singer has been the subject of multiple sexual misconduct allegations, most recently in an Atlantic exposé detailing sex with underage boys. It's unclear if Millennium will reconceive the project with a new director, stick with Singer, or keep this whole thing on the backburner for an extended period of time before the bad buzz dies down.

The comments "came out the wrong way", he said last week, though the veteran producer stopped short of officially removing Singer from the project. In a statement issued through Singer's attorney, he claimed this to be a "homophobic smear piece that he said was "conveniently timed" to take advantage of the success of Bohemian Rhapsody". He has not been charged with any crimes. His award nomination for the film was also withdrawn by GLAAD while Time's Up released a statement saying those who hire abusers, "perpetuate a broken system that rewards powerful people and allows them to act without outcome". BAFTA removed the filmmaker from contention in its Outstanding British Film Category while GLAAD removed the Queen biopic from its list of nominees entirely.

"I think victims should be heard and this allegation should be taken very, very seriously", he said last week. "I just don't agree to judge by Twitter".
