Gov. Newsom to Draw Down Guard Troops at Border

California Governor Gavin Newsom plans Monday to withdraw several hundred National Guard troops from the state's southern border with Mexico in defiance of the Trump administration's request for support from border states.

"The crisis on the border is a manufactured crisis and we are not interested in participating in this political theater", Newsom said in a press conference in Sacramento.

In a similar move, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham last week ordered most National Guard troops deployed at the state's border with Mexico to withdraw.

The move comes despite his predecessor's agreement - along with other past and current border state governors - to send troops to the border at the Trump administration's request.

In his State of the State address on Tuesday, the newly elected Democratic governor will say that border crossings had fallen to their lowest since 1971 and California's undocumented population had dropped to a more than 10-year low, spokesperson Brian Ferguson said.

Constantly pointing to threats from illegal immigrants, Trump has made building a wall on the US-Mexico border a priority of his presidency. Every president since Ronald Reagan has called on the National Guard for limited, temporary missions along the frontier.

Trump's demand for $5.7 billion to help build that wall was central to a 35-day partial USA government shutdown that ended last month.

Thousands of families have since been released into the San Diego area with nowhere to go, forcing nonprofits in the region to step up and offer temporary shelter. Grisham publicly rebuked the Trump administration's immigration policies when she announced the withdrawal, something Newsom also appears primed to do.

In his Spanish-language response to the president's State of the Union address Tuesday, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra warned that he is prepared to take Trump to court if he declares a national emergency to fund a wall at the U.S. -Mexico border while cutting federal funds to fire-damaged communities in the state.

Trump and Democrats in Congress have been engaged in a contentious battle over his proposed U.S./Mexico border wall, which would extend all the way from the Pacific Ocean to East Texas. The governor's office says some of these troops who are "specially trained counter-narcotic screeners" will be deployed to California ports of entry - both at the Mexican border and elsewhere.

"We suffered enough from that in the (1980s and 1990s) with Props 187 and 227", the excerpts read.
