‘I did inhale’: Kamala Harris admits she smoked weed in college

Kamala Harris' secret weapon Her sorority sisters

Kamala Harris on Monday said it is high time for the legalization of marijuana on the federal level - as she acknowledged that she once toked up in college.

Harris, a former California state attorney general, said she makes no apologies for pursuing violent criminals to keep communities safe, but added that she wished she could have done more to affect change "from the inside".

"I think it gives a lot of people joy", she said.

"They are trying to do what has been happening over the last two years, which is powerful voices trying to sow hate and division, and so we need to recognize when we're being played", Harris said. "And I inhaled. I did inhale".

"Half my family's from Jamaica, are you kidding me?"

While running for re-election as California's attorney general in 2014, Harris laughed when she was asked if she supported legalization, a position taken by her Republican opponent, Ron Gold.

"Listen, I think it gives a lot of people joy", Harris said of pot.

"This not a "but, ' it is an 'and" - and we need to research, which is one of the reasons we need to legalize it". "I believe we need to legalize marijuana, and we need to research the impact of weed on a developing brain". "You know, that part of the brain that develops judgment, actually begins its growth at age 18 through age 24".

'We have incarcerated so many, particularly young men - and young men of color - in a way that we have not for the same level of use, other young men.

Harris joins 2020 presidential hopeful Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), who in 2017 introduced legislation to end the decades-long ban on the medicinal plant, in the push to end the federal marijuana ban.

Harris's support for marijuana legalization is clearly not unique among the crowded Democratic primary. Last year, Harris supported fellow 2020 candidate Sen. "When I was in England", Clinton said during a 1992 interview, "I experimented with marijuana a time or two, and didn't like it".

Others supporting the bill are Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who's seriously mulling making a second straight run for the White House.

For nearly the entirety of Harris' political career, she has been against legalizing pot.

Harris, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, needled Barr, who said he does not support the current approach by the federal government allowing states to determine their own cannabis laws, despite federal law prohibiting its recreational use.

"He's entitled to his opinion", she said, laughing off the issue to local news reporters.

Although Harris wrote about cannabis reform in her 2018 book, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, this morning's interview on New York's Power 105.1 marked a turning point in her public support of legalization.
