Jo-Wilfried Tsonga wins ATP Tour title in Montpellier

Pierre-Hugues Herbert at the Open Sud de France

The World Number 177, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga edged past his countryman, Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4, 6-2 to clinch his first ATP trophy since the Antwerp title in October 2017.

Herbert raced into a 4-0 lead in the first set and never let slip his advantage as he moved a win away from his first singles tour title.

Later on Friday, sixth-seeded Jeremy Chardy faces Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in an all-French quarter-final, while Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus plays Radu Albot of Macedonia.

And the 33-year-old was a comfortable straight-sets victor over Herbert - a run of five games across the end of the first set and the beginning of the second holding the key.

Former champion Tomas Berdych reached the Open Sud de France semifinals the hard way, saving two match points in a 7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), 7-5 win against Filip Krajinovic on Friday. But Tsonga read the play on his second break point, guiding a forehand return victor up the line to earn the break.

Tsonga won five break points in all as he breezed through 6-1 6-3, setting up the clash with Herbert, a 6-2 7-5 victor over 2012 champion Tomas Berdych.

Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev claimed victory in the final of the Sofia Open on Sunday, beating Marton Fucsovics 6-4 6-3.

Monfils had plenty of opportunities, earning seven break-point chances, but he converted just one.
