Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes partnership raises England's hopes

Good job I didn't take my pants off!- Stokes reflects on 'bizarre' no-ball reprieve

Stuart Broad took a sensational one-handed catch during a dominant day in the field for England in the third Test against Windies in St Lucia.

The England all-rounder left the field shortly after registering his first 50 of the series, after being well caught in his follow through by Alzarri Joseph - only for TV replays to reveal a no-ball and lead to a summons to return from the dressing room.

After trudging from the oval at the Darren Sammy Stadium in Gros Islet, Stokes was removing his protective equipment when the third umpire declared that Joseph had delivered a no-ball after reviewing the footage.

Unusally, however, Stokes had already crossed the boundary rope and climbed the steps into the pavilion. However, he was the beneficiary of MCC's decision, in April 2017, to define Law 31.7, which governs the status of batsmen "leaving the wicket under a misapprehension".

The new code, which came into force in October 2017, includes an additional clause to reflect the ubiquity of televised replays in major matches.

"A batsman may be recalled at any time up to the instant when the ball comes into play for the next delivery unless it is the final wicket of the innings, in which case it should be up to the instant when the umpires leave the field". It was a good job I didn't take my trousers off.

England's innings had seen three slow partnerships all in the 30s, as well as a runless third-wicket stand between Joe Denly and Joe Root, before Buttler and Stokes combined to 124 runs off 214 balls to bat England into a relatively strong position and ensure that they should far surpass their highest innings total in the series.

Ben Stokes thanked God for technology in cricket after a freaky reprieve in St Lucia that came despite his having already returned to the pavilion.

'I was just sat in my chair and when I heard the shouting I thought someone had got out first ball. In worldwide cricket you shouldn't be walking off, getting into the changing rooms, and then back out there two minutes later. I have been working with Ramps (batting coach Mark Ramprakash) over the last couple of days, going back to a technique similar to that, ' he said. But I said to myself: "'Get back into the frame of mind, don't look at it as an opportunity, just try and be not out at the end of the day'". There was obviously a lot of cheering and I could have seen the amusing side of it.
