Maybe he thought he was playing baseball.
With about five minutes left in the third period, Malkin got tangled up with Flyers forward Michael Raffl near the benches.
Evgeni Malkin will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Tuesday. And while he admitted that it was a dirty play, he suggested that Raffl deserved some retaliation for punching him the back of the head while the two scrummed for a puck in the neutral zone. The Penguins forward was clearly irritated by Raffl and responded by recklessly swinging his stick in Raffl's direction as he skated away.
Malkin was assessed with a match penalty and removed from the game, leaving the Penguins shorthanded for the rest of the match.
Raffl wasn't penalized on the play.
The Penguins beat the Flyers 4-1.
"I don't know why I'm not playing smart with five minutes left", said Malkin, who was playing his first game with Pittsburgh since January 30 due to injury. It wasn't unsafe, he wasn't bleeding or anything. "He just like dived and the referee give me five minutes".
Malkin has not been suspended in his 13-year National Hockey League career, although he was fined $5,000 in 2018 for spearing Kings forward Dustin Brown.
