Newborn baby found on California road in frigid temperatures

Newspaper Carrier Finds Newborn Abandoned in Frigid Temperatures on Central Valley Road; Mother Sought

According to the Fresno Bee, a Fresno Bee newspaper carrier was delivering papers in Madera - traveling at about 5 miles per hour - when he noticed the newborn baby in the middle of the dark road.

A suspect allegedly approached a man as he walked down the road at 4.30am that morning and asked him to take her child. She was being treated as of Monday afternoon at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, CBS Sacramento reported, and was said to be in good condition.

"She got out of her vehicle and asked the man if he could help her", said Pogue.

It's unclear how long the newborn had been left in the road.

'The man directed her to the fire station and the Valley Children's Hospital down the street and suggested she take the baby there'.

A few minutes later, said Pogue, a newspaper deliveryman noticed something in the middle of the road. He saw that it was a baby dressed in a onesie without a diaper and lying on its back.

According to the Madera County Sheriff's Office, the baby girl, who was just hours old, was rushed to Valley View Hospital.

Temperatures in the area have been hovering around freezing through the night.

"It was very fortunate the baby was seen by the newspaper delivery person before she was seriously injured or possibly killed".

"Luckily, she was discovered early enough that she'll make a full recovery", Pogue.

A search is underway for the child's mother, who could face minimum charges of felony child endangerment. Authorities are now investigating the identity and whereabouts of the mother. "This female got out of her auto, asked the man if he could help her and asked him to take her child", Madera County Undersheriff Tyson Pogue told reporters Monday. The sites are typically hospitals or fire stations.
