Scores dead in Delhi hotel fire

At least 17 people died after a fire broke out in Hotel Arpit Palace in Delhi's Karol Bagh. "The fire has been doused". 26 fire tenders were rushed to the spot and rescue operation is underway. Bodies are being taken out now.

According to reports, the fire spread after a short circuit at around 4.30 am.

The dead includes a child. All the 13 taken to RLM hospital have died, of the 5 admitted to Lady Hardinge Hospital, 2 have succumbed to their injuries.

A large wedding party had booked out most of the hotel, and most of the victims were sleeping when the fire began. Those injured have been sent to the hospital.

In 2017, 14 people were killed, also in Mumbai, when a huge blaze tore through a popular restaurant. Owned by Jaypee Group, the hotel was a 10-storey luxury hotel in the 1980.

Police said they were investigating the cause, and a judicial probe has been ordered into the latest disaster to raise concerns over fire safety in India.

Luckily, no one was injured in the blaze that broke out at 8 am in the dispensary located on the ground floor. 30 fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

A fire department official said some fire extinguishers were found used suggesting people trapped inside tried to douse the fire in a bid to escape. The hospital fire was a stark reminder of the blaze at Kolkata's Calcutta Medical College a year ago.

Authorities have launched raids to enforce building regulations, fire safety measures and evacuation procedures but these steps have failed to check rampant violations by builders in a rapidly expanding Capital, the home to more than 18 million people.
