Thunder waive third-year guard Abrines

Thunder have reportedly waived guard Alex Abrines on Saturday

Abrines has played in just two games since December 23rd due to a personal matter.

The team and Abrines mutually decided for the 6-foot-6 guard to be released, with Abrines determining it best to step away from basketball to focus on his personal issue.

Abrines recently returned to play against the Orlando Magic and the Miami Heat but he has since missed the past three games for the team. "He's around the team, we always talk and communicate", said Billy Donovan on February 5th. Abrines was waived by the Thunder Saturday after three seasons with the franchise.

Known for his perimeter shooting, Abrines struggled to find a rhythm from 3 this season, though he hit a career-high seven 3s against Atlanta in November.

With the move, the Thunder's roster is down to 12 guaranteed contracts and two two-way contracts (Donte Grantham, Deonte Burton).

Alex Abrines has missed much of his third season with the Thunder. Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, teams can have as few as 11 players on its active roster, but only for up to two weeks at a time.

Abrines' release comes in the middle of a odd 2018-19 season that saw him struggle through the first 29 games (career-low 32.3% 3P), then missed 17 consecutive games due to personal issues.
