Torn letters key to 1986 killing of boy

A mother had been charged with killing her son in this 1986 North Las Vegas cold case

North Las Vegas Police Chief Pamela Ojeda said Monday the discovery came after detectives reopened the case in 2017 and tried unsuccessfully to trace the origin of a fraudulent birth certificate application in the name of the missing boy, Francillon Pierre.

Fleming, 60, was arrested January 29 at her marketing job in Boca Raton, Florida. She was arrested January 29 in Boca Raton, Florida, and is being transferred in custody to Nevada to face a murder charge.

When Francillon reportedly vanished on Saturday, Aug. 2, 1986, Fleming told police she and the boy's stepfather lost track of him while shopping for a bicycle at the swap meet. "They stated they still believed Jean had taken Francillon, and that the reason they moved to Florida was to be closer to Haiti, where they believed he was".

Fleming had long claimed Yo-Yo's father Jeane Pierre had kidnapped the tot and taken him to his native Haiti, but police said he had nothing to do with the boy's disappearance.

"We believe they were at the swap meet as a diversion and he was already deceased", an investigator now working the cold case said at the news conference.

Leavitt said the father was cleared as a suspect in 1986. Police are now trying to locate him.

Francillon's missing status was entered into the information kept by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children which, several years ago, released an age-progressed image showing what he might have looked like at the age of 29.

Fleming and Lee Luster traveled to Florida about 11 months after Francillon disappeared and were considered suspects, according a 1987 news article from the Orlando Sentinel. They also found that the child had numerous broken bones along with other injuries.

North Las Vegas police Officer Eric Leavitt says the couple married and moved to Boca Raton the following year. "At this point, evidence points to (Fleming), but the investigation is ongoing".

The child's body hasn't been found. The couple, who were charged months earlier with abusing the boy, were suspected of foul play after asking authorities not to publicize the boy's disappearance out of fears that it would be sensationalized by the media.

Police said detectives have spent more than a year working the case.

"What happened was totally unintentional. This is a case of a lot of little things that, put together, give us the knowledge that Amy Fleming was involved in the homicide of her child".

Fleming, previously known as Amy Luster, was living in an apartment in Dania Beach and was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on January 29, according to court records.

Yo-Yo's missing persons file is still now open, with a recent age-progression photo showing how he might look today had he survived his abduction.

Since then, the couple have lived in Hollywood, Sunny Isles Beach, Lauderhill and Lake Mary, public records show. Neighbors in the apartment complex where the couple lived said they had not seen the boy with Fleming and Lester for more than a week.
