Trump Signs EO Targeting China’s Growing Dominance In Artificial Intelligence

Trump administration unveils order to prioritise and promote AI

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday created to beef up how the US approaches artificial intelligence.

The executive order does not include any details about funding the initiative.

"Continued American leadership in Artificial Intelligence is of paramount importance to maintaining the economic and national security of the United States", Trump noted in a press statement attached to the order.

The measure is little more than symbolic.

Instead, the White House hopes to provide leadership for private industry to take the initiative in developing artificial intelligence.

Monday's order envisions regulatory guidance to ensure the technology is trustworthy, said the White House official.

"Artificial intelligence is something that touches every aspect of people's lives, from the way that they receive medical care to the way they grow or eat their food, to the way that energy is extracted throughout the country", an administration official said Sunday. Additionally, the directive will authorize expanded access to government data for researchers to help advance the technologies.

Engage internationally: It will call for a strategy for global collaboration that ensures AI is developed in a way that is consistent with American "values and interests". The socialist country set aside $150 billion for industrial investment, prompting a number of other countries with strong tech sectors, including South Korea, the UK, France and Canada, to launch their own AI investment initiatives. Lastly, the US will foster worldwide collaboration for AI.

The directive will call for better coordination across government agencies, developing regulatory and ethics rules for the use of artificial intelligence, and require federal departments to track spending on research and development of AI.
