Trump to sign artificial intelligence order to boost United States competitiveness

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday will sign an executive order asking federal government agencies to dedicate more resources and investment into research, promotion and training on artificial intelligence (AI), a senior administration official said.

This initiative, which will elevate federal funding for AI research and support USA -led AI worldwide standards, doesn't contain new AI development funding or additional details on next steps, The Verge reported.

America is widely considered the world leader in artificial intelligence - however, many believe the Chinese government's vast access to data might give it an advantage in the coming years.

First, the executive order will urge federal funding agencies to step up AI investments.

As part of his State of the Union address last week, Trump called for "investments in the cutting edge industries of the future", and the administration official underscored the importance of AI in "driving" these future industries for the US.

Engage internationally: It will call for a strategy for worldwide collaboration that ensures AI is developed in a way that is consistent with American "values and interests". AI researchers will need to have computer models, computing resources, and federal data to kickstart projects.

Create standards: Standards to push the development of "reliable, robust, trustworthy, secure, portable and interoperable AI systems" will be set out by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Retrain workers: It will ask agencies to prioritize preparing workers for the changes brought about by AI through apprenticeships, skills programs, and fellowships. Lastly, the USA will foster worldwide collaboration for AI.
