U.S. wants Hungary to "stop Huawei"

The measures are meant to encourage women to have more children and to reverse Hungary's population decline

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned USA allies on Monday against deploying equipment from Chinese telecoms gear manufacturer Huawei on their soil, saying it would make it more hard for Washington to "partner alongside them". "That is, if that equipment is co-located where we have important American systems, it makes it more hard for us to partner alongside them". That is, if that equipment is co-located where we have important American systems, it makes it more hard for us to partner alongside them.

He said that the U.S. was particularly concerned about a growing Chinese presence in the region and warned European allies against using technology from Huawei in their communications networks, saying it would make it more hard for Washington to "partner alongside them".

"We're fine with companies competing, but they have got to do so in a way that's fair and open and transparent, and they can't do so with anything other than an economic motive", he said.

The US has on many occasions accused China of using technology to steal secrets, while China denied this, saying the US wants to get rid of a competitor.

"For some time, the USA has spared no effort in fabricating unwarranted charges against China and making various "China threat" theories".

"We have to show up or expect to lose", one official said. He will wrap up the tour with brief stops in Belgium and Iceland.

The goal of his trip is to address the growing influence of Russian Federation and China in Central Europe. "Russian Federation and China are authoritarian powers who do not share our joint aspirations of freedom".

"This is the Hungarians' answer, not immigration", Orban said.

Pompeo put the blame for much of the backsliding on a lack of USA engagement.

Mr Szijjarto brushed off U.S. concerns over Russian Federation and China, saying Budapest was fulfilling its obligations to western allies as a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military alliance.

Pompeo was given a list of concerns in a meeting with Hungarian civic leaders. Three groups that took part said they believed Pompeo would bring them to Orban.

"I hereby announce that women who have given birth to and raised a minimum of four children will be exempt from the payment of personal income tax for the rest of their lives", Orban said near the end of his speech.
