US jury convicts Mexican drug lord El Chapo

It's been reported that Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán has been found guilty on all 10 counts that he was facing, of which the charges included "engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, conspiracy to launder narcotics proceeds, worldwide distribution of cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and other drugs, in addition to the use of firearms".

U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan lauded the jury's meticulous attention to detail and the "remarkable" approach it took toward deliberations. Cogan says it made him "very proud to be an American".

Guzman faced a drumbeat of drug-trafficking and conspiracy convictions that could put the 61-year-old escape artist behind bars for decades in a maximum-security USA prison selected to thwart another one of the breakouts that made him a folk hero in his native country.

Jurors could find Guzman guilty of only some of those violations and still convict him of crimes serious enough to put him in prison for decades.

The 61-year-old was a key player in the Mexican drug cartel landscape.

Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is escorted by soldiers in Mexico City, Mexico, on January 8, 2016.

Witnesses detailed assassinations and political payoffs, and how drugs were smuggled using tanker trucks, railway carriages and even shipments of canned peppers.

The jury heard extensive testimony about Guzman's rise to power as the head of the Sinaloa cartel in the high-profile trial before reaching the verdict Tuesday.

The jury of eight women and four men deliberated roughly 34 hours over 6 days.

The trial testimony lasted almost three months and the jurors have were tasked with deciding on 10 separate counts.

Federal prosecutors say Guzman's Sinaloa cartel amassed billions of dollars importing tons of cocaine, heroin and marijuana into the U.S.

Fourteen of those witnesses - mostly admitted drug traffickers and cartel associates - were cooperating with prosecutors in hopes of reducing their own prison sentences.

They had returned Tuesday to grapple with the complicated case at a federal courthouse in Brooklyn.
