If correct, it confirms that Apple is continuing to stick with the Lightning port on the iPhone for now and that it is unwilling to take the profit hit adding a more powerful charger to the box would bring.
For years now, Apple has relied on its proprietary Lightning connector for iPhone and iPad charging, but when the company started shipping modern MacBooks that support USB-C, that led to a lot of speculation that Apple's mobile devices were next.
This latest news on Apple passing on USB-C for the iPhone is in contrast with an from last summer when supply-side sources were claiming the USB-C ports were on the way for Apple's 2019 iPhone offering. According to Japanese site Mac Otakara, though, this will not be the case.
In fact, several rumours previous year suggested that the 2018 iPhone lineup would include 18-watt USB-C fast chargers, along with Apple's USB-C to Lightning cable. Noticing the trend, Apple had also transformed all its MacBook lineups and the recently unveiled iPad Pro to USB Type-C. As frustrating as it might be, it wouldn't be surprising to see the company deem the same effort as unnecessary on its iPhone models. For the 2019 iPhone models, there was hope Apple meant to improve the charger to allow for faster battery top ups, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
For fast-charging, you can pick up a Lightning-to-USB-C cable ($19) and a bigger charging brick ($29).
Apple's 2019 line of iPhones will also still include Lightning EarPods, a Lightning-to-USB-A cable and a standard 5W USB power adaptor, just like they have for many years now.
KitGuru Says: Given that battery life is perhaps the iPhone's weakest component, Apple could really do with providing a USB-C to Lightning charger if it retains the old connector.
