Georgiev's 55 saves help Rangers cool off Leafs 4-1

The Leafs need their power play to become a weapon again

The Toronto Maple Leafs absolutely destroyed the New York Rangers last night. On Saturday, the Canadiens pushed the Maple Leafs beyond regulation, John Tavares clinching Toronto's win 2:17 into overtime.

"Probably as close to a playoff atmosphere without being in the playoffs", said Canadiens captain Shea Weber.

"Tough one, because going into the game here I thought we all felt really inspired and excited to play", Lundqvist told the Rangers official website, referring to the ceremonies honoring the 1994 Stanley Cup-winning team. "Fun to play in".

Henrik Lundqvist finished 30 saves on 31 shots but NY was not able to find an equalizer before Carolina tallied twice into an empty net in the final 75 seconds. Obviously, it's cool to be a part of this type of rivalry.

Tavares scored the victor with a backhand glove-side on Carey Price after taking a slick pass from Mitch Marner that crossed up Jeff Petry and Phillip Danault. Blues goalie Jake Allen got the nod in net for the first time since January 17 and made 40 saves, while Juuse Saros stopped 24 shots for the Predators.

The Rangers penalty killers also helped to slow down the Maple Leafs. John Tavares set up William Nylander's tying goal with 11:25 to play in regulation before potting the victor 2:17 into the extra period.

Nylander answered 71 seconds later with a wrist shot from the face-off dot while using Weber as a screen.

The Leafs were definitely sharp with the man advantage, putting 23 shots on net over the course of four opportunities.

The teams combined for three goals in 4:42 to start the game.

Shaw was back in the lineup after missing 15 games with a neck injury and wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.

At 10:35, the Maple Leafs then responded with an unassisted goal by Kasperi Kapanen, with a snipe of a shot off the left post.

Montreal managed to contain some of Toronto's most explosive forwards, like Tavares and Austin Matthews, in the first period.

Zach Hyman stole the puck from Weber behind the net before finding Andreas Johnsson with a ideal backhanded cross-crease pass at 2:20 of the first.

The Leafs allowed a goal from Andrew Shaw less than a minute into the game in Montreal on Saturday and repeated that at MSG, with Mika Zibanejad putting NY into the lead at the 28 second mark. He is the Leafs best left winger, by a very wide margin, and yet, Leafs coach Mike Babcock played him on right-wing, on the fourth line. Toronto went 0 for 4 on the power play despite managing 23 shots. Price was screened by Frederik Gauthier and never saw the puck. "A little turnover at the blue line, they go down and score". Nylander gets Matthews the puck, and both players compliment each other's skill-sets beautifully. "It would be pretty hard to look at that power play and say it wasn't good".

Montreal scored the equalizer 1:13 into the second period when Tatar sent a floating shot past Andersen on the glove side.

The Canadiens made a trade earlier in the day, picking up forward Dale Weise and defenceman Christian Folin from Philadelphia in return for David Schlemko and Byron Froese.
