Mickelson wins at Pebble Beach

Don't spike this Rule 13.1c proving handy at Pebble Beach

He drilled a 7-iron into eight feet on the par-3 17th and made par, and then played conservatively up the par-5 18th and finished with a 6ft birdie for a three-shot victory.

Phil Mickelson notched multiple numeric milestones Monday with his victory in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Now a victor at that level, his tour card is safe for two years, which will give him a completely different outlook. Adding to it this week, being able to have another memory, another experience here at Pebble Beach is very special to me.

"Every time I get here I have such feelings of gratitude that all that this place has done for my family, starting with my grandfather", he said. "And to have my pro career start here, to have this victory, means a lot".

Mickelson won on American soil for the first time since the Phoenix Open in 2013.

The last two groups didn't tee off until after two weather delays, with rain postponing the start of play for an hour and a hailstorm bringing another two-hour hold-up.

And while he enjoyed the victory, Mickelson didn't consider it meaningful in any way for the US Open.

Asked in a greenside interview what the performance did for his confidence, Mickelson said: "Absolutely nothing, because it's nothing like the course we'll see". "The rough will be so deep and the greens will be so fast, it will be a totally different course".

Scott Stallings finished Sunday night with a 66 to finish alone in third. Casey's closing birdie ensured their triumph. Mickelson wanted to see if they could finish the last two holes; Casey, however, insisted they stop.

"Sometimes I get in my own bubble", Mickelson said.

I didn't get involved before the event Down Under and my three in-play picks all drew a blank but the AT&T worked out very nicely.

Phil Mickelson has downplayed suggestions that his win at Pebble Beach on Monday will have any bearing on his chances of completing the career grand slam when the U.S. Open is contested at the same venue in June.

Phil Mickelson tips his hat on the 18th green after winning the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

"It's been a treat this week", said Casey, who had entered this week with two weeks of rest after a tie for second at the Singapore Open on the Japan Tour. As darkness descended on the course, Mickelson had just tapped in on the 16th green with Casey still to putt.

"I was playing well and I just didn't take all the factors into account". It also moved him up 12 spots in the world rankings to No. 17 - one spot higher than he reached with last year's win at the WGC-Mexico Championship and his best world ranking since he was 16th in November 2016.
