Post-Brexit Britain Ready to Use ‘Hard Power’

Gavin Williamson

"The UK is a global power with truly global interest. we must be prepared to compete for our interests and our values far, far from home", Williamson said.

Speaking at the Royal United Services Institute, Mr Williamson also confirmed the government will invest £1.8 billion in cyber warfare defences to protect against foreign powers.

The HMS Queen Elizabeth, Britain's largest warship, is slated to head to the Pacific region, U.K. Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson said Monday.

Campaign Against Arms Trade has responded to a speech "Defence in Global Britain" by the Secretary of State for Defence, Gavin Williamson in which he spoke about the need for "hard power to support our global interests" and increased "lethality".

The carrier will take part in the mission along with F-35 jets from the United Kingdom and US.

China has laid claim to nearly all of the strategic South China Sea which is viewed as important for shipping lanes and potential resources.

Britain must be ready to use "hard power" against Russian Federation and China, defense chief Gavin Williamson said as London prepares to deploy its largest warship into contested Pacific waters.

"The alliance also must develop its ability to handle the kind of provocations that Russian Federation is throwing at us", he said.

He told those gathered for his speech that "state-on-state competition was reviving".

"We have to be ready to show the high price of aggressive behaviour".

He added: "To talk but fail to act risks our nation being seen as little more than a paper tiger".

Defending interventionist policy, he said the cost of failing to act in global crises had often been "unacceptably high", and that Western powers can not "walk on by when others are in need".

According to him, Brexit gives Britain an unparalleled opportunity to consider how we can project and maximise our influence around the world.

"We can build new alliances, rekindle old ones and most importantly make it clear that we are the country that will act when required".
