Rapper 21 Savage granted bond, to be released: lawyer

21 Savage

It appears that the legal strategy employed by JAY-Z and Roc Nation has worked as planned, at least for the time being, as 21 Savage has reportedly been released on bond pending a hearing on his potential deportation.

The rapper was released on bond Tuesday pending a deportation hearing.

"Mr. Abraham-Joseph has never hid his immigration status from the US government...the continued detention of Mr. Abraham-Joseph serves no other goal than to unnecessarily punish him and try to intimidate him into giving up his right to remain in the United States", his legal team said at the time of his arrest. "He won his freedom", it read.

Abraham-Joseph, 26, was granted bond too late Tuesday to be released right away, immigration lawyer Charles Kuck said by phone, adding that he anticipates his client will be released Wednesday. In a subsequent statement, an ICE spokesperson alleged 21 Savage to be a "United Kingdom national" who "initially entered the US legally in July 2005, but subsequently failed to depart under the terms of his nonimmigrant visa".

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) say the musician is a convicted felon.

21 Savage was nominated for two Grammy Awards for the hit "Rockstar", with Post Malone, including the coveted record of the year category, but was unable to attend the glitzy awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday because he was being held in Georgia.

A number of celebrities have organized a massive social media campaign, titled "21 Days You Could Be Detained If You're Undocumented in America", in support of Savage. As it was previously reported, Abraham-Joseph legally entered the United States in 2005 and his visa expired in July of 2006. "And he asks for your hearts and minds to be with them".
