British Racing To Resume In 'Risk-Managed' Setting On Wednesday

Clerk of Ludlow Racecourse Simon Sherwood said a deep clean is under way Racing at Ludlow has been suspended Hunting has been hit by the outbreak

The BHA notified the media and Newmarket community on Monday night regarding four positive samples identified at the yard of licensed trainer Simon Crisford.

Racing's resumption will come a full week after the BHA ordered a shutdown of all British racing following the discovery that several equine flu-infected horses had participated in races at the Ayr and Ludlow courses.

Three horses - which subsequently rose to six - were found to have the disease at Donald McCain's stable in Cheshire.

The news means fixtures will take place over jumps tomorrow at Musselburgh and Plumpton, and on the Flat at Kempton and Southwell, while there will also be Irish racing at Fairyhouse.

A top public school has become the latest victim of equine flu after an outbreak in the on-site stables.

Chief regulatory officer Brant Dunshea outlined the protocols for what the BHA has described as "risk-managed return" to racing.

It has also been our intention to ensure that we avoid an issue that could result in a long-term disruption to racing with the risk of many of our major events being unduly impacted.

Around 700 tests a day are being conducted, with the Animal Health Trust prioritising horses considered most at risk.

The BHA issued a statement shortly before midnight GMT Monday in which it explained how racing would resume but "only with strict bio-security controls in place".

Speaking on Tuesday's edition of After The Last, the Racing Post scribe said participant sentiment toward the sport's governing body remained mixed despite the BHA announcing a risk-managed return to racing will take place from Wednesday nearly a week after racing was halted.

"This risk has been assessed and, based on the evidence - and ensuring biosecurity measures are in place - the level of risk is viewed as acceptable", he added. Obviously, by definition, they will only be coming from yards which aren't under restriction from the BHA.

The BHA is finalizing the risk categories in which to slot individual trainers and plans to inform trainers of their eligibility on Tuesday morning.

"The critical thing is they have to have had the correct vaccination within the eight weeks preceding the run".

"It's great to be back racing, and we have a real treat for racegoers with a superb day of racing in prospect".

"The BEF continues to urge horse owners to be vigilant for symptoms of equine flu - coughing, nasal discharge, loss of appetite, lethargy - and call their vet if they think their horses are showing signs".
