Calgary students, doctors push federal government for change to e-cigarette laws

That is up from 3.6 million in 2017, a 36% increase.

According to a new infographic from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, e-cigarettes go by various names, including "e-cigs", "e-hookahs", "mods", "vape pens", "vapes", "tank systems" and "electronic nicotine delivery systems".

Among a list of requests, the group is asking the governments of Canada and Alberta to: require e-cigarettes to be sold from behind a pharmacy counter and only to people 18 and older; ban online sales of the products; ban all e-cigarette flavours except tobacco; ban advertising of vaping devices; regulate e-liquids to reduce toxins and ensure the contents are clearly labelled; and control the manufacture of the devices to ensure safety.

It is hard to miss the fact that e-cigarette use - or vaping - has seen a significant rise in popularity among teenagers. However, there were 1.5 million more youth e-cigarette users past year compared with 2017, and those who were vaping used the devices more often.

A current user is defined as a person who has used a product in the past 30 days. However, the first independent studies have shown that combustion is taking place and toxic and carcinogenic compounds are released, some in lower levels than in conventional cigarette smoke, others in higher levels.

On Monday, Gottlieb expressed concern that e-cigarette manufacturers may be reneging on vows they made a year ago to counter teen use. Across middle school students past year, any tobacco product use was reported among 9.5% of Hispanics and 6.8% of non-Hispanic blacks, and it dropped to 6.6% of non-Hispanic whites and dropped again to 3.8% of non-Hispanic students of other races.

The report also showed that those who use e-cigarettes are using them more frequently. "It's putting a new generation at risk for nicotine addiction", says CDC Director Robert Redfield.

The team exposed the cells to different concentrations of cigarette smoke, e-cigarette vapour and vapour from a heated tobacco device, and measured whether this was damaging to cells and whether it affected the cells' normal functions. According to Dr. Sharma, smoking is one of the major causes of preventable death.

"Nicotine is highly addictive and can harm brain development, including harmful effects on learning, memory and attention", Schuchat said. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, added: "These data are a sobering reminder of the rampant rise of youth e-cigarette use". "The devices also use nicotine salts, which can allow high amounts of nicotine to be inhaled more easily and with less irritation than the free-based nicotine that's used in most other e-cigarettes".

"We remain committed to being part of the solution", Hunter said.

Dozens of city students traveled to Albany last week to speak to state lawmakers on the harmful effects tobacco-use has on their communities.
