Netanyahu Confirms Latest Israeli Strike in Syria

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Tuesday that Israel had carried out an artillery attack in Syria on Monday night.

The comments were made to reporters on the sidelines of the Warsaw Middle East ministerial following Netanyahu's meeting with the Sultanate of Oman's Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, Yusuf bin Alawi.

Leading European countries Germany and France opted not to send their foreign ministers over concerns the meeting could highlight big-power tensions over Washington's decision previous year to withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and re-impose sanctions against Tehran.

"I think that holding this conference, in which Israel, the United States, various countries around the world and from the region sit down in one place. and discuss one topic-which, in my opinion, is the most important for our national security-is a very important achievement".

The United States and Poland kicked off an global conference on the Middle East on Wednesday.

Israel has been increasingly open about carrying out air strikes in Syria with an election looming in April.

"Tonight I believe we are beginning a new era, with Prime Minister Netanyahu from the State of Israel, with leaders from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, all breaking bread together, and later in this conference sharing honest perspectives on the challenges facing the area", Pence said addressing the guests.

"With the summit largely spurned by our Western European allies, the administration was forced to spin the event from an Iran-centric gathering to one focused on broader Middle East peace and security issues", NIAC said.

"We're trying to expand the number of nations who are engaged and have a stake in the future of a peaceful and prosperous Middle East", Brian Hook, the State Department's special representative for Iran, told Reuters.

US Vice President Mike Pence is leading Washington's delegation, which includes US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and senior White House adviser Jared Kushner, who is also Donald Trump's son-in-law.

Walla reported that sources in the security establishment stated that the issue would be raised by Netanyahu when he meets Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow next week.

Transatlantic cooperation was necessary to resolve problems in the Middle East, Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said.
