North Atlantic Treaty Organisation chief claims alliance preparing defensive measures for 'INF-free world'

"And we do not intend to deploy new ground-based nuclear missiles in Europe", the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation chief stated.

Stoltenberg said the ministers will discuss Wednesday "what steps North Atlantic Treaty Organisation should take to adapt to a world with more Russian missiles".

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg cautioned Tuesday the military alliance will respond to "more Russian missiles" following the collapse of a key Cold War-era arms treaty but will not deploy more nuclear missiles in Europe.

Jens Stoltenberg urged Moscow to return to compliance with the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty it agreed bilaterally with the USA in 1987.

The US began the process of exiting the treaty earlier this month in response to Moscow's deployment of the 9M729 missile, prompting Russian Federation to announce its own withdrawal.

On Feb. 2, Washington launched the six-month process for leaving the INF, insisting that a new Russian Federation missile system breaks the pact's range requirements.

The INF, which ended a buildup of warheads in Europe, bans the production and deployment of land-based cruise and ballistic missiles with a range of 500-5,500 kilometers.

Alliance meeting: North Atlantic Treaty Organisation defence chief Jens Stoltenberg has talks with defence ministers today.

Stoltenberg said that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has "a wide range of options, conventional and other options", but he declined to list them, warning that any speculation "would just add to the uncertainty".

"It's important that we don't start hierarchising or excluding individual points now, but really leave the whole palette on the table", she told reporters.

"Any steps we take will be co-ordinated, measured and defensive, and we do not intend to deploy new ground-based nuclear missiles in Europe", Mr Stoltenberg said in Brussels ahead of a meeting of alliance defence ministers.

Stoltenberg said the new Russian missiles were just the latest example of Moscow's increasingly assertive posture.

"They are deploying more and more of the new nuclear capable missiles in Europe". To return to compliance and save the INF Treaty.

Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader who signed the INF treaty with then U.S. president Ronald Reagan, launched a stinging attack on Washington over its exit from the pact on Wednesday.
