Singer Ryan Adams hits back over claims of sexual misconduct

Ryan Adams accused of sexual misconduct emotional manipulation by multiple women including ex-wife Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore, 34, accused her ex-husband and former music collaborator, Ryan Adams, 44, of "psychologically abusive behavior" when she was still launching her singing career in her 20s, according to The New York Times' account on February 13.

The allegations involve Adams using his industry clout to pressure the women into uncomfortable situations.

Moore said that during their marriage Adams diminished her talents as a singer and she accused him of controlling behavior. A woman referred to in the article as Ava, who corresponded with Adams on social media, said he used to send her explicit messages when she was underage.

Most disturbing among the allegations against Adams is the account of Ava, with whom Adams reportedly had numerous "sexual conversations"-the Times reviewed thousands of text messages the two exchanged when Ava was only 15 and 16 years old, reporting that Adams exposed himself to her on Skype and sexted her. Adams, who was in his late 30s when they first struck up an online relationship in 2013, is reported to have been fixated on Ava's age-he wrote in one text, "If people knew they would say I was like R Kelley lol".

"His controlling behavior essentially did block my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time - my entire mid-to-late 20s", 34-year-old Moore said to the Times. Adams's lawyer told the Times that his client couldn't recall speaking to any fans or aspiring musicians online about anything other than music, and that "if, in fact, this woman was underage, Mr. Adams was unaware".

Adams' lawyer said the singer denied all of the "extremely serious and outlandish accusations" from the "disgruntled individuals".

"Music was a point of control for him", Moore told The New York Times, which reported on the full extent of Adams' allegedly abusive behaviour. "To anyone I have ever hurt, however unintentionally, I apologize deeply and unreservedly", he tweeted.

"I am not a ideal man and I have made many mistakes".

"As someone who has always tried to spread joy through my music and my life, hearing that some people believe I caused them pain saddens me greatly".

Moore added, "What you experience with him - the treatment, the destructive, manic sort of back and forth behavior - feels so exclusive".

He also took the opportunity to deny the claims, calling the Times' piece "upsettingly inaccurate". "You feel like there's no way other people have been treated like this". She highlighted a letter that Adams wrote to her in November 2014 that said, "I would get in trouble if someone knew we talked like this". Some of its details are misrepresented; some are exaggerated; some are outright false. I am happy for everyone and doing my best.

Butterworth has said Adams harassed her with hundreds of text messages, phone calls and emails after she broke up with him.

Rising country star Phoebe Bridgers said that Adams was more concerned with starting a sexual relationship with her than helping her career when it came to working with her.

Stereogum has reached out to Adams' representation for comment.

'When someone told me we got married I thought they were joking. "And I wish everyone compassion, understanding and healing".
