South Africa vs Sri Lanka 1st Test: Day one highlights

On a green top, the visitors won the toss and elected to field, and that decision was immediately vindicated as the hosts failed to get going throughout their innings, eventually bowled out before the end of the first day's play.

"We were a bit unaware of the new guys".

"I think what surprised us was just the angle of their bowling and the skills they had", de Kock said. "They are two solid bowlers and they will give us trouble throughout the series, so we will just have to keep our eyes open for them".

The pace attack of Sri Lanka is depleted with injuries to Nuwan Pradeep, Lahiru Kumara and Dushmantha Chameera but Suranga Lakmal is back whilst Oshada Fernando, Mohmed Shiraz and Lasith Embuldeniya have been named in the squad with all three hoping to earn their first cap. But he produced a superb opening spell, having Dean Elgar caught behind and bowling Aiden Markram with a ball which swung back into the stumps.

While left-armer Vishwa largely seamed the ball into the right-handed batsmen, Rajitha bowled mostly outswingers, as the pair posed a variety of questions through the day.

SuperSport's Head of Production Alvin Naicker said he had seven dedicated cameras following the ball during play - leading to Bancroft being caught.

Replays showed the ball had pitched in line and would have hit the stumps - and that Sri Lanka's request for a review had come three seconds before the maximum 15 seconds allowed.

"It is the umpire's word", said Fernando.

The lapse was cheap as Amla made only three before being caught low down at second slip by Kusal Mendis off Lakmal, who had an outstanding first spell of one for six in seven overs.

Temba Bavuma and Du Plessis rode out the early storm and gradually started to change the momentum in a 72-run partnership which was ended in the last over before lunch when Du Plessis was caught down the legside by wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella off Rajitha for 35.

South Africa were 17 for three at that stage.

The Proteas will be looking to continue their good form in Test matches after their series whitewash of Pakistan when they face Sri Lanka at Kingsmead in Durban on Wednesday.

The embarrassing moment immediately had many social media users comparing it to the role TV cameramen played in exposing Australia's ball-tampering scandal last March.

Top-scorer Quinton de Kock admitted South Africa were "caught off guard" by the Sri Lankan attack.
