Google will finally reveal its gaming plans in exactly one month

Google teases a mysterious GDC 2019 event

Invitations for Google's GDC 2019 keynote went out today with a "light at the end of the tunnel" gif noting the date. According to, Google has begun sending out invites for their GDC keynote speech, with the promise that "all will be revealed" during the presentation. Stream allowed invited users to play Assassin's Creed Odyssey within a Chrome browser.

Google has had a presence in the mobile gaming world, but this project will put it in competition with several key industry players, both in the console space as well as PC gaming stalwarts, such as Steam and the fast-growing Epic Games store.

A previous report from Kotaku claimed the service would be paired with "some sort of hardware". This effective announcement of an upcoming announcement has renewed speculation surrounding Google's potential entry into the game-streaming market.

While that wasn't quite my experience (I never managed to crack 30 FPS despite having a solid internet connection), it seems others' experiences were positive enough to justify further development efforts from Google.

Project Stream has since finished its test and we've heard nothing from Google since.

"Sitting here, looking at screenshots of unannounced Google console games and debating whether or not to release them", read the tweet which was archived on popular gaming forum ResetEra. That implies that Google doesn't want to just build a gaming platform for third-party studios, but that it also wants to develop and publish its own games too. Games are run on cloud servers and streamed directly to players' PCs, tablets, TVs, or pretty much anything with a screen.
