Cross country pro-pipeline convoy arrives at Parliament Hill

Alberta convoy rolls into Ottawa for rally at Parliament Hill

A convoy of Albertans rolled into Ottawa, Ontario, Tuesday in a mass protest against Canada's federal energy and environmental policies, Kallanish Energy reports.

According to reports, the movement has become a lightning rod for extremist, anti-immigrant sentiments.

The main portion of the United We Roll Convoy set out from Red Deer, Alta., last Thursday and made stops in Regina, Dryden, Thunder Bay, and Sault Ste.

One of the issues the protesters in the convoy were concerned about is Bill C-48, which would formalize an oil tanker ban on the northern coast of British Columbia.

Small business owner Jerry Fetting, who flew in from Stony Plain, Alta., says he has been affected by the drop in oil prices in recent years.

Some trucks in the convoy display the signature yellow vest garment on their front grilles but Carritt stresses the rally is open to anyone fed up with the federal government as long as they aren't violent.

Hundreds of people wearing yellow vests walked in knee deep snow on Parliament Hill to hear speeches from demonstrators like Mark Friesen from Saskatoon.

A GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of the convoy has raised over $128,000.

The East Region OPP warned motorists that the convoy "may periodically delay or interrupt the normal flow of traffic on area highways and arterial roads", and said police were working with those involved "to minimize the impact on the travelling public and to ensure order and public safety". "Everybody that's peaceful is welcome".

Evan Balgord, the executive director the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, however, is warning that the convoy is giving a platform for hate. She said she is pleased to participate and that the organizers have made clear the protest is about pipelines and energy policy, not hate. Canadian energy workers deserve a government that supports their industry.

It arrived in Ottawa on Tuesday morning, and was expected to hold a rally on Parliament Hill.
