Model 3 loses Consumer Reports recommendation; Tesla drops

Lose CR Recommendation Over Car Reliability Issues

Tesla said the vast majority of these issues have been corrected and noted Consumer Reports' surveys show its vehicles rank among the highest in customer satisfaction.

People who responded to the Consumer Reports survey cited a number of different problems.

Consumer Reports originally scored the Model 3 as having "average" reliability in 2017 and again in 2018. "In addition, some members reported that the Model 3's sole display screen acted strangely". Others pointed to issues with vehicle paint or trim.

It's worth noting that Consumer Reports often pulls recommendations based on issues that have long since been corrected, a dynamic which Tesla, via a statement from a company spokesperson, claims is happening here.

According to a report on Elektrek, Tesla is preparing to launch leasing products for its Model 3 electric sedan in order to boost demand. The publication attributes this to an "enthusiast following" which results in owners brushing off the problems in lieu of brand loyalty. It's just one element used to calculate an overall score, which takes into account performance in road tests, government crash tests, warning and crash prevention systems and capabilities, and reliability and satisfaction ratings from the Auto Survey. Last May, within a week, CR went from saying itcouldn't recommend the vehicle to giving it a full recommendation after Tesla improved the car's brakes. That kind of love-hate relationship isn't uncommon for iconic vehicles with persistent quality issues, such as the Jeep Wrangler and Chevrolet Corvette, he said.
