SpaceX Docked Its ‘Crew Dragon’ Capsule with the Space Station This Weekend

Both the mannequin and the capsule were loaded with a series of sensors which measure noise, vibration and the stress among several other relevant data which play an essential role during the launch and flight towards the International Space Station. SpaceX needs to nail the debut of its crew Dragon capsule before putting people on board later this year. America's Trinity Chavez reports for the News with Rick Sanchez. That the docking process went without error will not be exclusively a sigh of aid for NASA's Business Crew Program-the venture to switch the retired Area Shuttle that's years delayed-however good news for the three astronauts at present residing on the station.

The space station's three astronauts had front-row seats as the white 27-foot-long (8-meter-long) capsule neatly docked, a little early no less. "Just one more milestone that gets us ready for our flight coming up here". Russian Soyuz seats go for up to $82 million apiece.

Next up, though, is Boeing, which is looking to launch its Starliner capsule without a crew as early as April and with a crew possibly in August.

Founded by billionaire Elon Musk, SpaceX has made the trip to the ISS a dozen times since 2012, but only to bring cargo to the station.

Crew Dragon on the launch pad

Reuters reported on February 21 that SpaceX and Boeing both must address significant design and safety concerns before they can fly humans.

Flight operations team members - some of them new to this - also need the six-day trial run, according to Kennedy Space Center's director, Robert Cabana.

The switch from NASA owning spacecraft to paying private firms for a service was initiated under former president Barack Obama - but due to development delays, has come to fruition under US President Donald Trump. "What today really represents is a new era in spaceflight". "You guys think it's a good vehicle, right?" he asked Behnken and Hurley, seated alongside him. The capsule's nose cap was wide open like a dragon's mouth, to expose the docking mechanism. SpaceX plans to recycle the newly flying capsule for a high-altitude abort test this spring, along with a booster launched and retrieved a week ago. The company pioneered the reusable rocket to help bring down the cost of each individual launch and to help eventually make space travel more accessible. "That would be pretty cool", he said.
