Maine CDC encourages vaccination as Measles cases increase nationally

Study Shows Once and For All That Vaccines Don't Cause Autism

Almost all were in unvaccinated individuals exposed to the virus either directly through travel, having contact with an infectious traveler, or by being exposed to someone with measles in an outbreak area. A new large study, looking at over 650,000 children across 10 years, demonstrates once again that autism rates are not higher in children vaccinated with MMR compared to those who were not vaccinated with MMR.

"The best protection against measles is vaccination", said Dr. Siiri Bennett, Maine State Epidemiologist.

Many criticized the results of studies debunking Wakefield. "Immunization helps protect you, your family, and your community from this unsafe and largely preventable virus". A decision not to vaccinate puts your child and your neighbor's child at risk.

Researchers at Copenhagen's Statens Serum Institut examined data for Danish children born from 1999 through the end of 2010, more than half a million people all together.

Another drawback is the potential for some kids to have undiagnosed autism before getting the MMR vaccine, which could make the MMR vaccine appear linked to autism when it really isn't connected, the study authors note. "Even in the face of substantial and increasing evidence against an MMR - autism association, the discussion around the potential link has contributed to vaccine hesitancy". The study reported an increased incidence of autism among children vaccinated with the MMR vaccine. Researchers studied and documented diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder and also all the risk factors of the disorder including low eight birth, preterm birth, autism diagnosis in sibling and age of parents.

Omer nevertheless hailed the Danish paper as "the largest, or one of the largest, studies on the subject". As the authors write, the study's size allowed them to conclude that "even minute increases in autism risk after MMR vaccination are unlikely".

Study Shows Once and For All That Vaccines Don't Cause Autism

This comes as several parents remain hesitant about vaccines.

This was a remarkable achievement given that in the years before measles vaccine was widely available (1963), an estimated 3 to 4 million people in the United States were infected each year, 48,000 were hospitalized and 400-500 died...majority children.

However, in some cases, people weren't vaccinated on that schedule.

Measles, which was declared an eliminated significant public health threat in the United States for two decades, has re-emerged in the Pacific Northwest and other states where vaccination campaigns are not reliable and parents have broad leeway over whether to vaccinate their children.

The MMR vaccine is readily available throughout the state.
