Honda recalls 83,977 vehicles in Canada

Honda Air Bag Recall

Honda is likely to recall around 1 million older vehicles in the US and Canada because the Takata driver's air bag inflators that were installed during previous recalls could be unsafe.

The total number of recalled inflators is now about 21 million in about 12.9 million Honda and Acura vehicles that have been subject to recall for replacing Takata front airbag inflators in the United States, the company said. At least 23 people have been killed worldwide because of the defect. In addition, owners can get a free rental vehicle for the day of the recall fix, or longer if a replacement part is temporarily unavailable, Honda says. But the chemical can deteriorate when exposed to high temperatures and humidity, blowing apart a metal canister and hurling shrapnel.

TL;DR Honda has recalled more than a million automobiles across Canada, the United States, and Central America due to faulty airbags that can explode and seriously hurt passengers.

The driver suffered an arm injury.

The models are from as far back as 2001 and as recent as 2010. Included are the 2001 to 2007 and 2009 Honda Accord, the 2001 to 2005 Civic, the 2002 to 2007 and 2010 and 2011 CR-V, the 2003 to 2011 Element, the 2007 Fit, the 2002 to 2004 Odyssey, the 2003 to 2008 Pilot, and the 2006 to 2014 Ridgeline pickup. Also covered are Acura luxury models including the MDX from 2003 through 2006, the EL from 2001 through 2005, the TL from 2002 and 2003 and the CL from 2003.

NHTSA, the government's highway safety regulator, issued a statement Tuesday acknowledging the recall and saying that not all vehicles that received replacement air bag inflators are affected.

Free repairs of the recalled cars would begin immediately in the United States with replacement parts made by alternate suppliers, Honda said. They contained a moisture-absorbing chemical and previously were believed to be safe.

Honda is recalling around one million vehicles for a second time over fears the air bags, installed by Takata, may be risky. About 100 million inflators are to be recalled worldwide.
