Nissan to end Sunderland production of luxury Infiniti brand

INFINITI Pulling out of Western Europe Starting this Year

Infiniti launched in Europe and the United Kingdom in 2008, but it has never taken off here. And while Infiniti plans to leave Western Europe, it will stay active in Eastern Europe, in addition to Asia and the Middle East.

Nissan will stop production of Infiniti cars at its factory in Sunderland, northeast England, the Japanese carmaker said Tuesday, one month after cancelling the plant's plans for the X-Trail SUV.

Union bosses have said Nissan should look to employ workers affected by its decision to end the production of its Infiniti vehicles elsewhere at its Sunderland site.

. Executives said that they were "working to find alternative opportunities" for all affected staff. As a result the Q30 auto and QX30 sports-utility vehicle will no longer be made in the UK.

Infiniti UK confirmed it will honour any outstanding vehicles warranties, while customers with a vehicle on order will be contacted in due course.

Sky News reported last week that shifts at the Sunderland plant could be reduced from three to two a day and potential result in up to 400 job losses.

Infiniti has 51 employees in its western Europe operations.

The Infiniti line-up of cars will be electric from 2021 and diesel versions will be discontinued, the company said.

The carmaker chose to shift production of its Q30 unit to Japan amid weak sales in western Europe, with work due to conclude in Sunderland "by mid-2019".

In a statement, Unite national officer Steve Bush said the decision, while driven by poor sales, was "obviously sad news".

'We will also be seeking assurances on future employment levels and the production of other models at Sunderland'.

"Western Europe remains the most challenging and competitive region for premium cars", Infiniti's chief spokesman, Trevor Hale, said.
