Brexit roundup: How is British media reacting to May's defeat?

It comes after Prime Minister Theresa May's amended Withdrawal Agreement was defeated in a second vote in the House of Commons on Tuesday evening.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May speaks at the start of the debate on the vote on the government's Brexit deal, in the House of Commons in London on March 12, 2019.

"The EU has done everything it can to help get the Withdrawal Agreement over the line", Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said after the House of Commons vote.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

If no-deal is ruled out, Parliament will vote Thursday on whether to ask the European Union to delay Britain's departure.

As many as 75 Conservative MPs voted against the Withdrawal Agreement, as well as the 11 MPs of the Democratic Unionist Party, the government's coalition allies.

'But we will do all we can to support people and businesses across Northern Ireland in the event that we leave without a deal. Does it wish to revoke (Brexit-triggering) Article 50?

An opposition Labour Party spokesman said this meant she had "given up any pretense of leading the country". "Today, we have secured legal changes", Ms May said in Strasbourg, France.

The "Irish backstop" is an insurance policy that will ensure there is no hard border in Ireland.

Battling with a croaky voice, Mrs May said she still believed leaving with a deal was the best option for Britain and "the deal we've negotiated is the best and indeed the only deal available".

Former Conservative MP Anna Soubry will be the group's Brexit spokeswoman and former Labour MP Chuka Umunna will be across policy co-ordination
Newly Independent MP Anna Soubry said Labour had betrayed its voters by not supporting the amendment

"Listening to debate in @HouseofCommons: there seems to be a unsafe illusion that the United Kingdom can benefit from a transition in the absence of the WA", Barnier tweeted, referring to the Withdrawal Agreement.

"While the margin of the defeat at 149 is far smaller than the 230 votes seen back in January, it is still large enough to leave any hopes of it gaining the requisite support before March 29th hanging in tatters".

Hours later, however, Attorney General Geoffrey Cox said these additions would not completely allay MPs fears of being trapped in the arrangement indefinitely. Plants and plant products from a non-EU country which have not been previously checked by an EU Member state would also be checked at authorised inland trade premises. "The government's strategy is now in tatters". Or does it want to leave with a deal, but not this deal?"Sterling, which had earlier in the day fallen by 2 percent to $1.3005, was trading at around $1.3086 shortly after the vote".

The EU said no deal plans were "more important than ever" after the defeat.

German EU affairs minister Michael Roth, called it "a far-reaching compromise". The main pro-Brexit faction in May's party, the European Research Group, said it did not recommend voting for her deal. "There is no alternative".

The U.K. Parliament has now twice rejected the withdrawal agreement that May spent the best part of two years negotiating with the European Union, and the bloc insists there will be no more talks.

Mr Farage continued: "You've got your plan". It is what you do with this second chance that counts.

However, parliament is expected firmly to reject a "no-deal" Brexit as well, so lawmakers would then vote again on Thursday - on whether government should request a delay to the leaving date to allow further talks.

Even if the deal is approved, Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay said there might need to be a "technical extension" so that all the needed laws can be passed. They are likely to agree, as long as Britain leaves before elections to the European parliament in late May.
