Google enters India’s booming online music market with its YouTube music app

YouTube Premium, YouTube Music launched in India; pricing starts Rs 99

YouTube, which already enjoys a king's share in the video streaming space in the country, joined the music streaming market on Tuesday, launching the YouTube Music app, and YouTube Music Premium for its users.

According to YouTube, YouTube Music will be available both as a standalone mobile app and a Web-based desktop interface that is designed for music streaming.

Google has announced the new YouTube Music service alongside the other two new services - YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium.

YouTube Music is a new music streaming service that offers music videos, official albums, singles, remixes, live performances, covers and hard-to-find music you can only get on YouTube. "Music from India has always been so much more than just the audio. It's interesting to note how Indian artists have consistently claimed top spots over the last few months in the Global YouTube Top Artists chart", said Lyor Cohen, Global Head of Music, YouTube, in a statement.

Personalised home page, filled with recommendations based on your previous music listening preferences.

Google's YouTube Music will offer local music playlist including Bollywood Hotlist, Upbeat Hindi Retro, Cosmic Indie Pop, Kollywood Hotlist, Tollywood Hotlist and yes, it will give access to global artist such as "Featuring Drake" playlist and several others.

A smart search feature that will allow the app to find a song even if the user can not remember the title.

Dedicated hotlist section that shows the current trending hot songs, so you don't miss out on them.

The YouTube Music app is available on both, Android and iOS, and can be downloaded off their respective App Stores. Google will let you try out YouTube Music Premium for free here and later on you can pay R59.99 ($4.18) per month or R89.99 ($6.27) per month for a family plan.

In addition to ad-free, background, and offline playback, with YouTube Premium users can access all YouTube originals like Cobra kai, BTS: Burn The Stage, at a fee of Rs 129 a month. Nearly all of these services, except Amazon Music, have paid plans starting Rs. 99. Priced at INR 129 per month, YouTube Premium includes a membership to YouTube Music Premium, offers an ad-free experience with background play and offline downloads for millions of videos on YouTube.

Youtube Music was globally launched in June past year, and right now, music lovers from 32 countries can access Youtube Music. Besides Spotify, YouTube Music will have to fight out existing rivals like Reliance's JioSaavn, Gaana, which is owned by Times Internet, a part of the Times Group which publishes this paper, Xiaomi-backed Hungama, Amazon Prime Music and Apple Music.
