Mozilla launches Firefox Send, a free self-destructing file-sharing service

Firefox Send encrypted file transfer service is free for everyone

Firefox Send aims to use not just the trustworthiness as a Mozilla as a privacy-focused, non-profit organization, but also in-browser end-to-end encryption to keep users' files private.

Users can set files to expire after a certain period of time, or after a certain number of downloads.

Once a file is uploaded, users can choose to have the download link expire in as little as 5 minutes or after one download.

Firefox Send has been available as a "Test Pilot" experiment since August 2017, but it took Mozilla some time to iron out all the kinks and ensure that the service will work for more than a handful of people at a time. Now, the tool has its own website, which lets you easily send files up to 2.5GB in size (with an account) to your friends, colleagues, or anybody else. However, Mozilla said it was motivated to mingle in the file sharing space so it could offer users a "more private and safer" choice.

Firefox Send is now available through the send.firefox.com web portal, but Mozilla said the service would also be available as an Android app in beta later this week.

Firefox Send files are available for up to 7 days and can be password protected. Recipients can download the files via the link they receive from the person sharing the content; they don't need a Firefox account to download, but they will need one to upload a file with a size greater than 1GB. They don't need to have a Firefox account to access your file. Formerly a Firefox Test Pilot experiment, Send lets you "safely and simply" share files from any browser, according to Mozilla Product Strategist Nick Nguyen. Send also lets you configure auto-expiry settings for the link.
