20% of Hamilton employers plan to hire this spring

Amongst 680 employers surveyed, 15% said they expect to raise staffing levels, 4% anticipate a decrease, whilst 80% do not expect a change.

Industry sectors. Employers in all 13 national industry sectors forecast an increase in payrolls during the second quarter.

The other four per cent are unsure of their hiring intentions. Agriculture, Hunting, Forestry & Fishing sector employers report the strongest hiring intentions with a hopeful Net Employment Outlook of +17%.

Rocca said once seasonal variations were removed from the data, there is a one per cent increase in hiring.

Those looking for a job in Vancouver or Victoria have reason to be pragmatic.

Statewide, the employment outlook is "upbeat", according to ManpowerGroup.

Hiring intentions outside of London are increasingly conservative heading into Spring nearly across the board, including the East (down nine points to +3%), Wales (down nine points to 0%), the South West (down seven points to +1%) and North East (down five points to 0%).

Overall, hiring intentions strengthened in five of the seven industry sectors when compared with the previous quarter, most notably the services sector, which improve by 7ppt. Elsewhere, Kwazulu Natal employers anticipate some workforce gains with an Outlook of +5%, but Eastern Cape employers report uncertain hiring plans with an Outlook of -1%. More worryingly, the negative Outlook in the Business and Financial services sector - which employs almost a fifth of all United Kingdom workers - suggests jobs are set to be lost in Britain's most important sector.

Construction appears to be the sector with the best hiring prospects (+26 percent), followed by that of electricity, natural gas and water (+24 percent). The sector has now recorded its least optimistic year since the depths of the financial crisis in 2009, while the Transport, Storage and Comms sector has recorded a negative Employment Outlook for three straight quarters - its least optimistic Outlook since 2010. Outlooks stand at +8% in both the transportation & utilities sector and the wholesale & retail trade sector, whilst the weakest outlook of +7% is reported by finance, insurance & real estate sector employers. Meanwhile, Micro- and Medium-size employers report cautious hiring plans with Outlooks of +1%.

Medium employers report a considerable decrease of 10 percentage points when compared with this time one year ago, and the Outlook for Micro employers is 2 percentage points weaker.
