Chiefs release Eric Berry

Chiefs release Eric Berry

The Kansas City Chiefs have released safety Eric Berry at the start of the new league year.

"I'd like to thank Eric for his contributions to our team and the Kansas City community over the last nine years", Reid said. Chiefs coach Andy Reid described Berry as "a special person" and said that "seeing his passion and watching his love for the game has been truly remarkable".

The Chiefs agreed to a $42 million, three-year deal with former Texans safety Tyrann Mathieu before the start of free agency, and it turned out to be a signal that Berry's time in Kansas City was over.

He earned five trips to the Pro Bowl in his time with the Chiefs.

Berry's release is the latest of several moves on defense for the Chiefs. Then it picked up steam once Spagnuolo examined the personnel and decided that numerous pieces did not fit with his preferred 4-3 system.

Berry missed most of last season with the Chiefs as he recovered from injuries.

Berry was limited to six games in 2014 before revealing he'd been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. His career numbers include 440 tackles (372 solo), 5.5 sacks, 14 interceptions (five return TDs), 51 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. That was the first of four seasons in which Berry missed nearly an entire season.

He was rewarded with a massive contract, but suffered a torn Achilles' tendon in the 2017 season opener and missed the rest of the season.

Berry intends to play football this season, a source told Yahoo Sports.

The final exit from a core of impressive players proved to be the largest.

Berry - who also won the Ed Block Courage Award in 2015 after returning from cancer and twice was selected as the Derrick Thomas Award victor as the Chiefs' MVP (2015, 2016) - is tied for second in franchise history with five interception return touchdowns.

By releasing Berry, the Chiefs don't have to pay him an additional $7.25 million that would have become guaranteed by Friday.
