Ethiopian Airlines sends flight recorders from crashed jet overseas for analysis

Trump orders Boeing 737 Max fleet grounded in US

But the U.S. regulator says it is safe to fly.

Canada has grounded the world's third largest fleet of Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft, following the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines jet on Sunday.

Of the top 10 countries by air passenger travel, all but the United States and Japan have halted flights of the 737 MAX.

Egypt, Thailand, Lebanon and Uzbekistan on Wednesday joined them, and Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde Gebremariam said Boeing should ground all such craft until safety is clear.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Asrat Begashaw said the airline has "a range of options" for the data and voice recorders of the flight's last moments.

All 157 people on aircraft perished.

This comes after several nations, from the United Kingdom to Japan, grounded the passenger jets after two Boeing 737 Max 8s crashed in the past four months, killing 346 people onboard.

The aerospace giant, which cancelled the ceremonial factory rollout of its wide-bodied aircraft, is facing increased pressure to dispel safety concerns about its 737 Max plane after regulators, including in the European Union and China, put most of the global fleet out of action.

The U.S., meanwhile, has continued flying the planes, with the Federal Aviation Administration saying the aircraft are safe to fly. Dawit Gebremichael sat with a photograph of his only sister, Sara, a flight attendant on the plane.

"We are supporting this proactive step out of an abundance of caution". Safety is a core value at Boeing for as long as we have been building airplanes; and it always will be.

"There is no greater priority for our company and our industry. We are doing everything we can to understand the cause of the accidents in partnership with the investigators, deploy safety enhancements and help ensure this does not happen again".

The Dow is a price-weighted index, meaning the company with the highest share price has the heaviest weighting. And airline pilots on at least two US flights have reported that an automated system seemed to cause their planes to tilt down suddenly.

But many security experts say it's too early to draw conclusions.

However, the tilting problem did not appear related to the new automatic anti-stall system that's suspected of contributing to the deadly Indonesia crash on that aircraft model in October.

The flight recorders were recovered quite early from the sunken wreckage previous year, although the final report is yet to be finalised and released. The order applies to all Max 8 and Max 9 versions of the popular airliner.

It now has 10 Max 8 planes in its fleet.

Norwegian has bet heavily on the "MAX" to become its aircraft of choice for short- and medium-range flights in coming years as the low-priced carrier seeks to boost its fuel efficiency and cut the cost of flying.

In a statement Wednesday, before the order from Transport Canada, Air Canada spokeswoman Isabelle Arthur said the airline has a "flexible rebooking policy" that includes options to change flights to another aircraft if space permits, but wouldn't indicate if that comes with a fee.

The captain immediately disconnected the autopilot and resumed climbing.

Since the Indonesia crash, there has been a focus on an automated anti-stall system in the 737 Max that dips the aircraft's nose down.
