Facebook and Instagram are down for some users. Here's how Twitter reacted

A familiar site around the world right now

Facebook users logging on to social media site reported getting a message stating that the site was doing "required maintenance".

According to Downdetector.com, a large spike in reports of problems with Facebook happened just before noon.

Users of Facebook Inc. and two of its popular side shoots, Instagram and Messenger, experienced technical difficulties around the globe for hours on Wednesday. Complaints began popping up all over the web around 10 a.m. PT stating that neither Facebook nor Instagram was allowing them to log in.

This usually means we're making an improvement to the database your account is stored on. "Make sure you're connected to the internet and try again".

Photo sharing network Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, is also experiencing loading problems. In a move that might have tasted a little bitter, the social network tweeted about the disruption to ensure its audience that they were working on it.

USAToday.com reported that Facebook users have clicked over to Twitter, where the hashtag #facebookdown is trending, but the story said it is not clear at this time what's causing the issue.

This is a developing news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
